Spare parts dealers in Ghana have pushed back against a proposed 30% increase in transport fares, arguing that rising diesel prices do not justify the full extent of the hike. The dealers’ opposition was reported by UA.NEWS on Sunday, September 6, 2026.
The fare increase has been floated by the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), which has cited higher operating costs as the primary reason for the adjustment. However, spare parts dealers contend that the price increases they have seen do not align with the scale of the fare rise being proposed, according to UA.NEWS.
The dispute centers on fuel costs. While the government has extended a diesel price relief of GH¢2 per litre, the GPRTU has stated that this measure is insufficient to prevent a fare increase, as reported by 3News. In a separate development covered by Asaase Radio, the Chamber of Oil Marketing Companies (COMAC) has noted that not all transport operators use diesel, calling for similar relief for petrol consumers.
